Lares Trek via Pachacutec – A Unique Andean Experience

Most treks that finish in Aguas Calientes tend to be very crowded, especially during the high season. For this reason, we believe the New Lares Trek is the perfect option if you are looking for a more authentic and peaceful mountain experience.

We recommend this route because it is the most beautiful of all Lares trekking options. As you may know, there are many variations of the Lares Valley treks, with different starting and ending points—but we carefully designed this itinerary to offer you the very best of the region.

Throughout this journey, you will fully immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of the Andes: colorful lagoons, snow-capped peaks, glaciers, rocky valleys, and endless panoramic landscapes. In addition, you will have the chance to observe Andean wildlife, including chinchillas, Andean foxes, and even condors soaring above the mountains.

During the trek, you will see alpacas and llamas almost every day, and one of the most fascinating aspects of this experience is the opportunity to witness the daily life of local communities. The people of the Lares Valley still preserve their ancestral traditions—growing their own food, wearing beautifully handmade colorful clothing, and living in traditional stone houses with thatched roofs. Their animals, such as alpacas, llamas, and sheep, graze freely in the mountains, and in many cases, llamas are still used as a means of transport.

The New Lares Trek offers you the chance to enjoy the very best of the Andes in a unique and less crowded environment. At the end of your journey, you will also have a full day to explore Machu Picchu, making this an unforgettable combination of culture, nature, and adventure.

Only a few travelers choose this route—those who do, truly enjoy a more exclusive and rewarding trekking experience.

Trip itinerary

Your adventure begins along a scenic trail that gradually leads you to the traditional community of Canchacancha. After approximately 3 hours of hiking, we will stop at a carefully selected spot to enjoy a freshly prepared lunch by our professional trekking chefs.

After lunch, we continue for about 2 more hours until we reach the beautiful village of Canchacancha, where you will have a unique opportunity to interact with local families and experience their way of life firsthand.

In the afternoon, we will welcome you with a warm tea time (“happy hour”) to help you relax and recharge before dinner. You will also enjoy a delicious dinner along with comfortable camping arrangements for the night.

If you wish, this is a great moment to learn a few words of Quechua, the ancient language of the Incas, directly from the locals.

While you explore the community, our support team will set up your campsite. By around 5:00 pm, everything will be ready for you to unwind. Later, we will gather again for hot drinks and enjoy dinner at approximately 7:00 pm.

At night, far from the city lights, you will have the chance to admire one of the most magical highlights of the Andes—a sky full of stars, creating a truly unforgettable experience.

Day 2 is considered the most challenging yet rewarding part of the trek, as we ascend from 3,700 m (12,139 ft) to 4,700 m (15,420 ft)—the highest point of all Lares treks.

Your day begins early at 5:00 am, when our support team will wake you with a warm drink—coca tea or coffee—delivered directly to your tent. After packing your personal belongings, you’ll enjoy a nutritious breakfast prepared by our expert chefs before starting the hike around 6:30 am.

The ascent takes approximately 4 hours uphill, but every step is rewarded with breathtaking scenery: colorful lagoons, dramatic rocky landscapes, snow-capped peaks, and herds of llamas and alpacas grazing peacefully, cared for by local Andean shepherds who often spend their time weaving traditional textiles.

Upon reaching the Pachacutec Pass (4,700 m / 15,420 ft), you will be rewarded with spectacular panoramic views and a close view of the majestic Pachacutec Mountain. Here, we will also perform a special Andean ceremony (offering to the mountain spirits)—a unique cultural moment that connects you deeply with the traditions of the Andes.

After enjoying the summit, we descend for about 1 hour to Coyalago, where we will have lunch beside a beautiful lagoon. Following lunch, we continue hiking for approximately 1.5 hours toward our campsite.

Along the way, you’ll admire stunning waterfalls and witness local families preparing for the evening in this remote Andean landscape.

We arrive at our campsite in the Quiswarani Community (3,700 m / 12,139 ft), where you’ll enjoy a warm tea time (“happy hour”), followed by a delicious dinner and a peaceful night of camping surrounded by nature.

Today is a truly special day as we make our way to Aguas Calientes, combining adventure, nature, and relaxation—perfect for mountain lovers.

We start early at 5:00 am with a warm cup of coca tea, followed by breakfast before beginning the final stage of our trek around 6:00 am.

The day begins with an approximate 2-hour uphill hike to the Cuncani Pass (4,200 m / 13,779 ft). From this incredible viewpoint, you’ll enjoy spectacular panoramic views over the Cuncani Valley, with its colorful lagoons surrounded by majestic mountains.

If you’re lucky, you may spot chinchillas and Andean foxes, and you will certainly see plenty of alpacas and llamas, often close enough for amazing photos.

After reaching the summit, we descend for about 2 hours to the Cuncani community, where we will enjoy a well-deserved lunch.

In the afternoon, our private transport will take you to the Lares Hot Springs, where you’ll have time to relax and enjoy the natural medicinal waters—a perfect way to recover after the trek.

We then continue by car for approximately 2.5 hours to Ollantaytambo, where you will have dinner before boarding the train to Aguas Calientes.

Upon arrival, you will check into your hotel and rest, preparing for the highlight of your journey: your visit to Machu Picchu the following day.

Most travelers who visit Machu Picchu arrive by train, focused mainly on reaching the site itself. However, in your case, after completing the Lares Trek, your experience will be much deeper—you will not only visit Machu Picchu, but also truly understand and feel the legacy of the Inca civilization.

After an early breakfast, you will take the bus to Machu Picchu, a scenic journey of approximately 25 minutes to the main entrance. Our goal is to arrive around 6:00 am, allowing you to enjoy the site with fewer crowds and, if weather permits, witness a breathtaking sunrise over Machu Picchu.

Once inside, you will have some time to take photos before starting a guided tour of approximately 2.5 hours, where our expert guide will explain the history, architecture, and mysteries of this iconic Inca citadel.

After the guided tour, you will have free time to explore on your own and fully enjoy the magic of the Lost City of the Incas.

If you wish, you can also hike to:

  • Sun Gate (Inti Punku)
  • Inca Bridge

Additionally, if you have booked in advance, you may climb:

  • Huayna Picchu
  • Machu Picchu Mountain

After completing all activities, you will return by bus to Aguas Calientes, where you can enjoy a well-deserved lunch.

In the afternoon, you will board the train back toward Cusco. Upon arrival, our team will transfer you by car directly to your hotel, marking the end of an unforgettable journey through the Andes.

We were a group of four girls, all 24 years old! It was an incredible experience! Genrri was an excellent guide, and our chef, Ricardo, was fantastic; he prepared vegetarian lunch and dinner for us every day. I highly recommend it!

We did the 4 day and 3 night Salkantay Trek on the 27th of July, and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip. I couldn't recommend it enough, especially with Machu Picchu Teams.Everything exceeded our expectations from the accommodation and food to the organisation and most importantly, the amazing staff. Our guide Max made the experience so special. He taught us so much about the Quechua way of life and Inca traditions at every stop along the trek, which gave us such a good appreciation for the places we were visiting. He was also so much fun to be around, always making us laugh and keeping everyone's spirits high, even during the toughest parts of the hike. His positivity, encouragement and knowledge really made the experience unforgettable.A huge thank you as well to our chefs, especially Braulio, the head chef. We genuinely couldn't believe the quality of the food considering where we were. Every meal was so fresh and delicious and they had lots of vegetarian options too. We were given three generous meals a day which also included starters at lunch and dinner, plus snacks along the way. It was far beyond anything we expected on a trek. What really sets this company apart is the people. Max wasn't just a guide he genuinely cared about everyone in the group and always made sure we were doing okay. He knew exactly when to encourage us on the harder climbs, when to make us laugh, and when to stop to tell us another story about the history and culture of the area. He gave us a group name and gathered us every morning to do a chant together to get us ready for the day. You can tell he loves what he does and his passion made the whole trek so much more meaningful. The entire team was so kind and welcoming, and they made us feel looked after from start to finish. If you're thinking of doing the Salkantay Trek, I couldn't recommend Machu Picchu Teams more. It was an unforgettable experience, and we're so grateful to everyone who made it so special.

This tour is full of adventures and blessings. The exciting bicycle descent from the Andes took us through changing landscapes to the tropical rainforest. The hike through the jungle, led by an expert guide, allowed us to learn about the local flora and fauna. The RAFTING and ZIPLINING activities added excitement to the trip and were perfectly organized. The natural hot springs were an ideal place to relax after days full of activities. The visit to Machu Picchu was the highlight, with its impressive architecture and view. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a combination of adventure, nature, and culture.
