Tour Overview

While most travelers head straight to the Sacred Valley, the Southern Valley of Cusco offers a quieter, more authentic side of the region — rich in history, culture, landscapes, and local traditions.

This half-day tour is perfect for travelers who want to go beyond the classic routes and discover a different side of Cusco. In just one morning, you’ll explore a fascinating mix of Inca engineering, pre-Inca architecture, colonial art, highland scenery, and traditional village life.

Your journey begins at 8:00 a.m., heading south from Cusco into a peaceful valley filled with history and charm. The first stop is Tipón, an impressive Inca site famous for its advanced hydraulic system, terraces, and perfectly designed water channels — a true example of ancient engineering at its finest.

Next, you’ll visit Oropesa, a traditional town known as the “bread capital” of the region. Here, you’ll have the chance to taste its famous freshly baked bread, a simple but delicious local experience.

The tour then continues to Pikillacta, one of the most important pre-Inca archaeological sites near Cusco. Built by the Wari culture, this ancient city offers a powerful look into the civilizations that shaped the Andes before the rise of the Incas.

To end the day, you’ll visit the beautiful San Pedro Church of Andahuaylillas, often called the “Sistine Chapel of the Americas.” Inside, you’ll find breathtaking murals, colonial artwork, and rich religious details that make it one of the most treasured churches in Peru.

After a morning filled with culture, history, and local flavor, you’ll return to Cusco with a deeper understanding of the region — and a memorable experience far from the usual tourist crowds.

Trip itinerary

Your Southern Valley experience begins at 8:00 a.m., with a private van and professional guide picking you up directly from your hotel in Cusco. From there, you’ll enjoy a scenic 40-minute drive southwest of the city, leaving the busy streets behind and entering one of the region’s most culturally rich valleys.

Your first stop is Tipón, located about 25 km from Cusco and known as the “Temple of Water.” This impressive Inca site forms part of the ancient Qhapaq Ñan road system and is one of the finest examples of Inca hydraulic engineering. Here, you’ll explore agricultural terraces, stone stairways, royal enclosures, and perfectly carved water channels that still flow today — a powerful reminder of the Inca’s deep connection with nature and water.

Next, you’ll continue to Pikillacta, one of the most important and best-preserved pre-Inca cities in the Cusco region. Built by the Wari culture, this archaeological complex covers around 50 hectares and offers a fascinating look into urban planning before the rise of the Inca Empire. As you walk through its ancient streets and stone structures, your guide will help you understand the meaning behind its Quechua name — often translated as “Small Town” or “Flea Town.”

The final highlight of the tour is the traditional town of Andahuaylillas, part of the famous Andean Baroque Route. Here, you’ll visit the breathtaking Church of San Pedro Apóstol, widely known as the “Sistine Chapel of America.” Inside, you’ll discover an extraordinary collection of colonial murals, paintings, carved woodwork, and religious details that cover the church from floor to ceiling. One of its most unique features is the baptistery inscription written in five languages: Latin, Spanish, Quechua, Aymara, and Puquina — a rare and powerful symbol of the cultural fusion that shaped the Andes.

After a morning filled with Inca engineering, pre-Inca history, colonial art, and local culture, you’ll return to Cusco, arriving around 1:00 p.m.

  • Comfortable Tourist Van
Travel smoothly between each site in a reliable and comfortable tourist vehicle, designed to make the journey easy and enjoyable from start to finish.
  • First-Aid Kit
Your safety comes first. Both the guide and vehicle are equipped with a complete first-aid kit to assist with common travel situations such as minor scrapes, altitude discomfort, or digestive issues.
  • Oxygen Tank
As an extra safety measure, an oxygen tank is available in the vehicle. Even though the Southern Valley is generally lower than Cusco, we always travel prepared.
  • Professional English-Speaking Guide
Explore with a knowledgeable local guide who will bring each destination to life through engaging stories, cultural insight, and clear historical explanations.

What’s Not Included

  • Tourist Ticket
Entrance to the Inca archaeological sites is not included. For this circuit, you’ll need the Partial Tourist Ticket, which costs 70 Peruvian Soles per person.
  • Lunch
Lunch is not included in this half-day experience, giving you the flexibility to enjoy a meal back in Cusco after the tour.
  • Tips for the Team
Gratuities are not included and are completely optional. However, if you enjoyed the service, a tip is always a kind and appreciated gesture in Peru.
  • Personal Documentation: You absolutely need your passport to purchase entrance tickets. A valid student ID may also get you a discount on the general tourist ticket.
  • Small Backpack: A compact backpack is perfect for carrying your essentials—water, snacks, documents, and extra layers—without being cumbersome.
  • Layered Clothing: The weather can be variable. A long-sleeve t-shirt is great for sun protection, and a fleece or pullover is perfect for the cooler morning and evening temperatures.
  • Comfortable Pants and Shoes: You’ll be doing a fair amount of walking on uneven ground and steps, so comfortable, flexible pants and supportive walking shoes are essential.
  • Sun Protection: The Andean sun is intense. Sunglasses with UV protection, high-SPF sunscreen, and a wide-brimmed sun hat are non-negotiable.
  • Rain Gear: Be prepared for unexpected showers, especially in the rainy season. A rain jacket, compact umbrella, or a simple plastic poncho will be a lifesaver.
  • Hydration: Plan to carry at least two liters of water to stay hydrated. A reusable water bottle is environmentally friendly, but any bottle will do.
  • Cash (in small denominations): This is crucial for buying tickets and for any purchases from local vendors who may not be able to make change for large bills.
  • Camera or Smartphone: You’ll want to capture the memories! A portable charger is also a great idea, as batteries can drain quickly.
  • Snacks: Pack some light snacks like energy bars or cookies, or buy some fresh fruit from local markets along the way.
  • Insect Repellent: Mosquitoes can be present, so repellent is a good idea for your comfort.
  • Hygiene Helpers: It’s always wise to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as these aren’t always available in public restrooms.
  • Plastic Bags: A few plastic bags are handy for storing any personal garbage responsibly.

Travel information

What is the best season to visit the Southern Valley?

The best time to visit is during the dry season, from April to October. During these months, the weather is more stable and visibility is clearer, as the landscape is less likely to be covered by clouds.

Can altitude sickness affect me on this tour?

The Southern Valley is located at a lower altitude than Cusco, which reduces the risk of altitude sickness. However, it is highly recommended to acclimatize in Cusco for one or two days before taking the tour and to engage only in light activities during that time.

Is the Southern Valley Tour suitable for children?

Yes, this tour is suitable for children. It is important to follow your travel agent’s recommendations. Children may also be eligible for discounts on certain entrance tickets.

Things To Know

  • Weekend Crowds: The Southern Valley is a popular weekend destination for families from Cusco. The towns of Tipón, Saylla, and Lucre are famous for their traditional cuisine, and restaurants can get very busy. Sundays typically see the heaviest crowds.
  • An Authentic Experience: This region receives relatively few international tourists, offering a more authentic and less crowded experience. It’s a fantastic opportunity to engage with the local way of life.
  • Booking: Last-minute bookings are often possible. However, during the peak season (May to August), it’s wise to book at least a week in advance to ensure guide availability. Entrance tickets are always available.
  • Water & Payments: Bottled water is easy to purchase along the route. Remember that cash is essential for buying tourist tickets on-site; credit cards are not accepted.
  • Departures: Daily departures are available for this tour, with a minimum of two participants required.

Pro Tips:

  • Acclimatize First: When you arrive in Cusco, give yourself at least one day to rest and acclimatize to the high altitude before heading out on tours.
  • Prepare for Rain: Even in the dry season, a surprise shower can happen. Being prepared will keep you comfortable.

Lost Objects, Group Tours & Strikes

  • Lost Objects: You are responsible for your personal belongings. Keep them with you at all times.
  • Group Tours: Be aware that group tours include people of different ages and physical abilities. Everyone will move at their own comfortable pace, so patience and understanding are key.
  • Strikes and Demonstrations: Protests are relatively common in Peru and can lead to road blockages. If a strike affects your tour, a reputable company will notify you immediately and offer a full refund for the impacted service or help you reschedule.

Cancellations and Refunds:

  • Full Refund: You’ll receive a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before the tour’s scheduled start (minus any non-refundable bank transaction fees).
  • Partial Refund: If you cancel within 24 hours of the tour but before 7 PM the day before, you are eligible for a 50% refund.
  • No Refund: No refund is available if you cancel after 7 PM the day before the tour.

Tourist Tickets for the Southern Valley

To enter the Inca sites, you must purchase a tourist ticket. You have two main options.

  • The General Tourist Ticket (Boleto Turístico Integral): This is the best choice if you plan to explore Cusco extensively. It provides access to sixteen attractions, including sites in the Southern Valley, a Cusco city tour, and the Sacred Valley. It costs 130 Peruvian Soles (approx. $36 USD) and is valid for ten consecutive days. A discounted rate of 70 Soles (approx. $20 USD) is available for students with a valid ID.

Entrance Tickets

Partial Tourist Ticket (Boleto Turístico Parcial – Circuit II)

This is the most economical option for visitors who plan to explore only the Southern Valley. The ticket is valid for one day and includes entrance to the archaeological sites of Tipón and Pikillacta.

  • Price: 70 Peruvian Soles (approximately USD 20)

  • Student discounts: Not available

San Pedro Church Ticket (Sistine Chapel of the Andes)

This ticket is not included in the Tourist Ticket and must be purchased directly at the church.

  • Entrance fee: 25 Peruvian Soles

  • Includes access to Huaro Church; however, this tour itinerary does not allow time to visit it.

We did the 4 day and 3 night Salkantay Trek on the 27th of July, and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip. I couldn't recommend it enough, especially with Machu Picchu Teams.Everything exceeded our expectations from the accommodation and food to the organisation and most importantly, the amazing staff. Our guide Max made the experience so special. He taught us so much about the Quechua way of life and Inca traditions at every stop along the trek, which gave us such a good appreciation for the places we were visiting. He was also so much fun to be around, always making us laugh and keeping everyone's spirits high, even during the toughest parts of the hike. His positivity, encouragement and knowledge really made the experience unforgettable.A huge thank you as well to our chefs, especially Braulio, the head chef. We genuinely couldn't believe the quality of the food considering where we were. Every meal was so fresh and delicious and they had lots of vegetarian options too. We were given three generous meals a day which also included starters at lunch and dinner, plus snacks along the way. It was far beyond anything we expected on a trek. What really sets this company apart is the people. Max wasn't just a guide he genuinely cared about everyone in the group and always made sure we were doing okay. He knew exactly when to encourage us on the harder climbs, when to make us laugh, and when to stop to tell us another story about the history and culture of the area. He gave us a group name and gathered us every morning to do a chant together to get us ready for the day. You can tell he loves what he does and his passion made the whole trek so much more meaningful. The entire team was so kind and welcoming, and they made us feel looked after from start to finish. If you're thinking of doing the Salkantay Trek, I couldn't recommend Machu Picchu Teams more. It was an unforgettable experience, and we're so grateful to everyone who made it so special.

This tour is full of adventures and blessings. The exciting bicycle descent from the Andes took us through changing landscapes to the tropical rainforest. The hike through the jungle, led by an expert guide, allowed us to learn about the local flora and fauna. The RAFTING and ZIPLINING activities added excitement to the trip and were perfectly organized. The natural hot springs were an ideal place to relax after days full of activities. The visit to Machu Picchu was the highlight, with its impressive architecture and view. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a combination of adventure, nature, and culture.
