Tour Condor Canyon Chonta – 1 Day

Unforgettable adventure through ancient Andean trails & breathtaking mountain landscapes

5.0 Based on 342 Reviews
1 Day

Tour Overview

Some journeys are designed to leave you speechless — and the Condor Canyon of Chonta is one of them.

This full-day adventure takes you deep into one of Peru’s most impressive natural landscapes: the dramatic Apurímac Canyon, a wild and powerful setting where the majestic Andean condor can be seen soaring freely in its natural habitat. As one of the largest flying birds in the world and a sacred symbol of the Andes, seeing the condor in flight is a truly unforgettable moment.

But this experience is much more than wildlife watching. Along the way, you’ll also discover the rich history and culture of the region with visits to the lesser-known archaeological sites of Killarumiyuq and Tarawasi — two fascinating places that offer a deeper look into the Inca world, far from the usual tourist crowds.

The journey also brings you to the remote community of Chonta, a peaceful Andean village where rural life moves at a slower, more authentic pace. It’s the perfect opportunity to connect with the landscapes, traditions, and quiet beauty of the Peruvian highlands.

If you’re looking for a day trip that combines nature, history, culture, and a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife experience, the Chonta Condor Canyon tour is an unforgettable choice.

Trip itinerary

Your journey begins with a 7:00 a.m. hotel pickup in Cusco (3,399 m / 11,152 ft), setting off toward one of the most impressive natural viewpoints in the Andes: Chonta Condor Canyon.

The drive is part of the adventure, taking you through changing landscapes, quiet villages, and scenic mountain roads. After about one hour, you’ll make your first cultural stop near Ancahuasi (3,465 m / 11,368 ft) to explore Killarumiyuq (3,650 m / 11,975 ft), known as “The Moonstone.” This fascinating archaeological site offers a unique connection to Andean astronomy, spirituality, and Inca heritage.

From there, you’ll continue for around 30 to 40 minutes to Tarawasi (2,675 m / 8,776 ft), another important Inca site where your guide will bring the past to life through stories, history, and cultural context.

After exploring these hidden archaeological gems, the journey continues for about 45 minutes to the remote village of Chonta, where you’ll enjoy a well-deserved lunch surrounded by the peaceful atmosphere of the Andes.

Refreshed and ready, you’ll begin the main experience of the day: the hike to the Condor Canyon viewpoint. The walk takes approximately 1.5 hours each way, following a mostly flat highland trail with a gentle downhill section near the end. Along the route, keep your eyes on the sky — condors may appear even before you reach the viewpoint.

Once at the canyon, the reward is unforgettable: majestic Andean condors soaring above the Apurímac Canyon, dramatic cliffs, wide-open landscapes, and the river winding far below. It’s one of those rare moments where nature feels truly powerful and timeless.

After enjoying the views and taking photos, you’ll hike back along the same route for another 1.5 hours, then board your van for the return journey to Cusco. Arrival is usually between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m., depending on road and traffic conditions.

By the end of the day, you’ll return with much more than photos — you’ll carry the memory of ancient Inca sites, remote Andean villages, and the unforgettable sight of condors flying freely in their natural home.

What is included

  • Comfortable Tourist Van
Travel in a modern, comfortable vehicle designed to handle the mixed road conditions on the way to Chonta, ensuring a safer and smoother journey.
  • First-Aid Kit
Your safety comes first. Both the guide and vehicle are equipped with a complete first-aid kit, including basic support for altitude discomfort, stomach issues, and minor cuts or scrapes.
  • Oxygen Support
As an added safety measure, oxygen is available during the tour. Even though Chonta is lower than Cusco, this extra precaution reflects a professional and well-prepared service.
  • Professional English-Speaking Guide
Explore with an experienced guide who knows the route, the history, and the best viewpoints. Their stories and explanations will help you connect more deeply with the landscapes, archaeology, and local culture.
  • Box Lunch in Nature
Enjoy a carefully prepared box lunch surrounded by the dramatic scenery of Chonta — a simple but memorable meal with the Andes as your backdrop.
  • All Entrance Fees Included
Relax and enjoy a hassle-free day. Entrance fees to Condor Canyon, Tarawasi, and Killarumiyuq are already included in your tour.

What’s Not Included

  • Breakfast
Breakfast is not included. Since pickup is at 7:00 a.m., you’ll usually have enough time to enjoy breakfast at your hotel before the tour begins. Most hotels in Cusco start serving breakfast around 6:00 a.m.
  • Tips for the Guide & Driver
Gratuities are not included and are completely optional. If you’re happy with the service, a tip is a thoughtful and appreciated way to thank your guide and driver for their work.

What to Bring for the Chonta Condor Canyon Tour

  • Binoculars
Highly recommended for the best views of the condors. They’ll help you appreciate their size, movement, and flight up close from the viewpoint.
  • Water – At Least 1.5 Liters
Staying hydrated is essential at altitude. A reusable bottle or Camelbak is ideal for drinking comfortably during the hike.
  • Insect Repellent
Don’t forget it — mosquitoes can appear once you begin the walk toward the canyon.
  • Trekking Shoes
Proper hiking shoes are essential. The trail can be dusty and may become slippery if it rains, so good grip and support are important.
  • Sun Protection
The Andean sun is strong. Bring a wide-brimmed hat, high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, SPF lip balm, and ideally a long-sleeve shirt for extra protection.
  • Rain Gear
Mountain weather can change quickly. A rain jacket is recommended, and a lightweight poncho is a smart extra, especially if the sky looks cloudy.
  • Comfortable Hiking Pants
Trekking pants are the best option, but any comfortable, breathable, and durable pants will work well.
  • Extra Layers or Change of Clothes
During the rainy season, from December to March, bringing an extra layer or change of clothes is a great idea in case you get wet.
  • Personal Snacks
Lunch is included, but energy bars, fruit, or trail mix are useful for a quick boost along the way.
  • Cash in Local Currency
Bring small bills or coins for snacks, drinks, or purchases from local vendors. Card payments are usually not available in rural areas.
  • Personal Medication & Portable Charger
Bring any medication you personally need, plus basic items like ibuprofen if you usually take it. A power bank is also useful, as phone batteries can drain faster in cold weather.
  • Camera or Phone
The views are incredible — from condors in flight to canyon landscapes, this is a tour full of unforgettable photo opportunities.
  • Comfort Item for the Drive
A small travel pillow can make the van ride more comfortable. You can leave it in the vehicle during the hike.

We were a group of four girls, all 24 years old! It was an incredible experience! Genrri was an excellent guide, and our chef, Ricardo, was fantastic; he prepared vegetarian lunch and dinner for us every day. I highly recommend it!

We did the 4 day and 3 night Salkantay Trek on the 27th of July, and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip. I couldn't recommend it enough, especially with Machu Picchu Teams.Everything exceeded our expectations from the accommodation and food to the organisation and most importantly, the amazing staff. Our guide Max made the experience so special. He taught us so much about the Quechua way of life and Inca traditions at every stop along the trek, which gave us such a good appreciation for the places we were visiting. He was also so much fun to be around, always making us laugh and keeping everyone's spirits high, even during the toughest parts of the hike. His positivity, encouragement and knowledge really made the experience unforgettable.A huge thank you as well to our chefs, especially Braulio, the head chef. We genuinely couldn't believe the quality of the food considering where we were. Every meal was so fresh and delicious and they had lots of vegetarian options too. We were given three generous meals a day which also included starters at lunch and dinner, plus snacks along the way. It was far beyond anything we expected on a trek. What really sets this company apart is the people. Max wasn't just a guide he genuinely cared about everyone in the group and always made sure we were doing okay. He knew exactly when to encourage us on the harder climbs, when to make us laugh, and when to stop to tell us another story about the history and culture of the area. He gave us a group name and gathered us every morning to do a chant together to get us ready for the day. You can tell he loves what he does and his passion made the whole trek so much more meaningful. The entire team was so kind and welcoming, and they made us feel looked after from start to finish. If you're thinking of doing the Salkantay Trek, I couldn't recommend Machu Picchu Teams more. It was an unforgettable experience, and we're so grateful to everyone who made it so special.

This tour is full of adventures and blessings. The exciting bicycle descent from the Andes took us through changing landscapes to the tropical rainforest. The hike through the jungle, led by an expert guide, allowed us to learn about the local flora and fauna. The RAFTING and ZIPLINING activities added excitement to the trip and were perfectly organized. The natural hot springs were an ideal place to relax after days full of activities. The visit to Machu Picchu was the highlight, with its impressive architecture and view. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a combination of adventure, nature, and culture.
