Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain Day Tour

Unforgettable adventure through ancient Andean trails & breathtaking mountain landscapes

5.0 Based on 342 Reviews
4 days

Tour Overview

While most travelers head straight to the famous Rainbow Mountain, there’s a hidden gem that offers an even more authentic and peaceful experience: Palcoyo.

This lesser-known alternative is perfect for those looking to escape the crowds and connect more deeply with the Andes. Instead of just one mountain, you’ll witness three stunning colorful peaks in the Palcoyo range — a truly unique and panoramic experience.

What makes this tour even better? The hike is shorter and more accessible, allowing you to enjoy the scenery without exhaustion. That means more time to pause, breathe, and fully take in the beauty of these surreal landscapes.

And for those seeking something extra special, there’s the option to explore the incredible Stone Forest, a natural formation that feels almost otherworldly. From here, you’ll also enjoy breathtaking views of the majestic Ausangate Mountain, one of the most sacred and impressive peaks in the Andes.

If you’re looking for a quiet, magical, and off-the-beaten-path adventure, Palcoyo is the perfect choice — a place where the journey feels personal, and every view feels like a discovery.

Trip itinerary

Your adventure begins early, with a 5:30 a.m. pickup from your hotel in Cusco (3,399 m / 11,152 ft). To fully enjoy the experience, it’s highly recommended to acclimatize at least one day in advance — giving your body time to adjust to the altitude and making the journey much more comfortable.

From Cusco, you’ll travel south for about 90 minutes to Cusipata (3,310 m / 10,860 ft), where you’ll enjoy a traditional Andean breakfast — the perfect way to fuel up for the day ahead. The journey then continues toward Combapata (3,475 m / 11,400 ft), where you’ll pause to admire and photograph its charming colonial bridge, a quiet and authentic glimpse into local history.

As the road unfolds, the landscapes become even more spectacular. You’ll pass through Checacupe, another historic stop known for its beautiful colonial bridge, before following the scenic route along the Salka River. Along the way, keep an eye out for alpacas grazing freely — a classic Andean postcard moment.

Finally, you’ll arrive at the Palccoyo community (4,100 m / 13,451 ft), where your trek begins. Unlike other high-altitude hikes, this one is short, accessible, and incredibly rewarding. In about one hour, you’ll reach the main viewpoint, where three stunning colorful mountains unfold before you — a peaceful and panoramic alternative to the more crowded routes.

From here, you’ll also have the option to explore the fascinating Stone Forest, a surreal natural formation that adds an extra layer of adventure. For those who want to go a bit further, your guide can lead a light 40-minute walk to higher viewpoints, revealing even more breathtaking angles of the landscape — including views of the majestic Ausangate Mountain in the distance.

After spending 2 to 3 hours enjoying the scenery, taking photos, and simply soaking it all in, you’ll return along the same route. A well-deserved traditional lunch in Cusipata awaits, giving you a chance to relax and enjoy local flavors before heading back.

You’ll arrive in Cusco around 6:00 p.m., ending the day with unforgettable memories of one of the Andes’ most peaceful and magical landscapes.

Optional Highlight: The Stone Forest Experience

For those feeling good at altitude, there’s a short but rewarding extension — a 10-minute uphill walk to the Stone Forest. The trail may be a bit steep, but the reward is worth it: a panoramic viewpoint where you can see the three rainbow mountains and the towering Ausangate glacier all at once. Plus, this route creates a circular trail, adding variety to your hike.

Travel information

What to Bring for the Palcoyo Adventure

  • Warm Layers
Temperatures can change quickly at altitude — layering is key to staying comfortable throughout the day.
  • High-Protection Sunscreen
The Andean sun is intense, even on cloudy days — SPF 90+ is strongly recommended.
  • Sunglasses & Hat
Essential to protect yourself from strong UV rays and wind exposure.
  • Rain Poncho (Seasonal)
Traveling during the rainy season? A waterproof layer is a must to keep you dry and comfortable.
  • Hiking Shoes
A good pair of sturdy trekking shoes will make your walk safer and much more enjoyable.
  • Water
Staying hydrated at high altitude is absolutely essential for your energy and well-being.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Optional Highlight: Stone Forest

The visit to the Stone Forest is optional — but highly recommended. It’s one of those hidden gems that elevates the entire experience, offering spectacular panoramic views and a unique landscape that feels almost otherworldly.

Insider Tips for the Palcoyo Experience

  • Best Time to Visit
During the rainy season, it’s best to go in the morning. The mineral-rich terrain can increase the risk of lightning in the afternoon, so earlier visits are safer.
  • A Peaceful Alternative
Palcoyo offers a much quieter and more authentic experience compared to the classic Rainbow Mountain, with chances to see local Quechua shepherds and their llamas and alpacas.
  • More Than One Mountain
You’re not just visiting one viewpoint — you’ll experience an entire landscape filled with colorful valleys, unique rock formations, and panoramic views.
  • Cultural Stops Along the Way
The tour includes a stop in Checacupe, where you can walk across a traditional Inca bridge and enjoy a cultural highlight of the region.
  • Easy Access & Short Walk
The vehicle takes you to high altitude, and from there it’s just a short and manageable walk to the main viewpoint, making it accessible for most travelers.
  • Weather Tip
If snow covers the mountains, don’t worry — during the rainy season it usually melts quickly, revealing the vibrant colors underneath.
  • Basic Facilities Available
The local community provides bathrooms and simple infrastructure for visitors.

Traveler Tips to Make the Most of Your Trip

  • Great for All Ages
The shorter hike makes this experience suitable for families, beginners, and travelers of all ages.
  • Go When It’s Sunny
The mountain colors are much more vivid on sunny days, while cloudy conditions may make them appear less intense.
  • Acclimatization is Key
Spend at least 2–3 days in Cusco before the tour to properly adjust to the altitude.
  • Perfect for Short Trips
If you want incredible landscapes without a demanding hike, Palcoyo is an excellent option.

Difficulty Level – What to Expect

Palcoyo is considered an easy to moderate hike, with around 1.5 to 2 hours of walking in total. The main challenge is the altitude, so it’s important to take your time and listen to your body.

Extra Highlights You Shouldn’t Miss

  • The Red River (Seasonal)
During the rainy season, you may see a nearby river with a striking red color caused by mineral-rich sediments.
  • Local Culture & Photos
You’ll encounter locals in traditional clothing. If you’d like a photo with them or their animals, it’s customary to offer a small tip.

Essential Travel Advice

  • Walk at a slow and steady pace to avoid altitude discomfort.
  • Stay hydrated throughout the day.
  • Dress in layers to adapt to changing weather conditions.
  • Respect the environment by staying on trails and not leaving any waste.

Good to Know

  • Dietary needs such as vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free can be accommodated with prior notice.
  • In group tours, people walk at different speeds, but the guide ensures everyone stays safe.
  • In case of strikes or road closures, tours may be canceled with a full refund.
  • Cancellation policy varies depending on timing, so it’s important to review details in advance.

We were a group of four girls, all 24 years old! It was an incredible experience! Genrri was an excellent guide, and our chef, Ricardo, was fantastic; he prepared vegetarian lunch and dinner for us every day. I highly recommend it!

We did the 4 day and 3 night Salkantay Trek on the 27th of July, and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip. I couldn't recommend it enough, especially with Machu Picchu Teams.Everything exceeded our expectations from the accommodation and food to the organisation and most importantly, the amazing staff. Our guide Max made the experience so special. He taught us so much about the Quechua way of life and Inca traditions at every stop along the trek, which gave us such a good appreciation for the places we were visiting. He was also so much fun to be around, always making us laugh and keeping everyone's spirits high, even during the toughest parts of the hike. His positivity, encouragement and knowledge really made the experience unforgettable.A huge thank you as well to our chefs, especially Braulio, the head chef. We genuinely couldn't believe the quality of the food considering where we were. Every meal was so fresh and delicious and they had lots of vegetarian options too. We were given three generous meals a day which also included starters at lunch and dinner, plus snacks along the way. It was far beyond anything we expected on a trek. What really sets this company apart is the people. Max wasn't just a guide he genuinely cared about everyone in the group and always made sure we were doing okay. He knew exactly when to encourage us on the harder climbs, when to make us laugh, and when to stop to tell us another story about the history and culture of the area. He gave us a group name and gathered us every morning to do a chant together to get us ready for the day. You can tell he loves what he does and his passion made the whole trek so much more meaningful. The entire team was so kind and welcoming, and they made us feel looked after from start to finish. If you're thinking of doing the Salkantay Trek, I couldn't recommend Machu Picchu Teams more. It was an unforgettable experience, and we're so grateful to everyone who made it so special.

This tour is full of adventures and blessings. The exciting bicycle descent from the Andes took us through changing landscapes to the tropical rainforest. The hike through the jungle, led by an expert guide, allowed us to learn about the local flora and fauna. The RAFTING and ZIPLINING activities added excitement to the trip and were perfectly organized. The natural hot springs were an ideal place to relax after days full of activities. The visit to Machu Picchu was the highlight, with its impressive architecture and view. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a combination of adventure, nature, and culture.
