Drive: Approximately 4 hours to Capuliyoc
Hiking time: Around 3 hours (downhill)
Meals included: Lunch and dinner

Day 2 is one of the most challenging and rewarding stages of the trek to Choquequirao, taking you deep into the dramatic landscapes of the Andes.

Descent to the Apurímac River

The day begins early with a hearty breakfast before starting a 1-hour steep descent to Apurimac River at Playa Rosalina (1,200 m / 3,937 ft).

Here, you’ll experience the power of the canyon, surrounded by lush vegetation and the sound of the river below.

Ascent to Santa Rosa

After crossing the hanging bridge, the trek continues with a challenging uphill climb to Santa Rosa.

This section takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours and follows a continuous ascent with switchbacks. The hike is scheduled early in the morning to avoid the strongest sun and make the climb more manageable.

Climb to Marampata

After a short rest, the trek continues with another 2 to 2.5-hour ascent toward Marampata (2,850 m / 9,350 ft).

As you gain elevation, the landscape opens up, offering spectacular panoramic views of the Apurímac Canyon and surrounding peaks.

This peaceful Andean village is known for its incredible views and unforgettable sunsets, especially on clear days.

Day 2 Summary

Hiking time: 5 to 6 hours
Difficulty: Challenging
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Accommodation: Local lodge
Camp altitude: 2,850 m (9,350 ft)

This day involves a significant elevation gain of nearly 1,500 meters, making it physically demanding but incredibly rewarding, with some of the most impressive views of the entire trek.

This is the most anticipated day of your trek, as you finally reach the incredible Choquequirao, one of the most remote and fascinating Inca sites in Peru.

Early Start and Hike to Choquequirao

The day begins early with a nutritious breakfast before setting out on a 1.5-hour hike from Marampata toward the ruins.

As you walk, the morning light gradually reveals the dramatic Andean landscape, making the approach to Choquequirao even more impressive.

Guided Exploration of Choquequirao

Upon arrival, you’ll begin an in-depth guided tour of this extraordinary archaeological complex, often referred to as the “sacred sister” of Machu Picchu.

Highlights of your visit include:

  • Ceremonial plazas and ritual platforms
  • Intricate stone temples and structures
  • Agricultural terraces carved into the mountainside
  • Ancient water channels used for both ceremonial and practical purposes

If conditions allow, you may also visit the lower sector to see the famous stone-carved llamas, a unique artistic feature representing the importance of llama caravans in Inca culture.

Lunch at the Site

To maximize your time exploring, you’ll enjoy a packed lunch at the site, allowing you to rest while staying immersed in the peaceful atmosphere of Choquequirao.

Return to Marampata

After several hours of exploration, you’ll begin the hike back to Marampata in the afternoon.

Upon arrival, a freshly prepared dinner will be waiting for you at your lodge.

Overnight in Marampata

You’ll spend another night in a family-run lodge, surrounded by the quiet beauty of the Andes, reflecting on one of the most memorable days of the trek.

Day 3 Summary

Hiking time: 3 to 4 hours round trip
Difficulty: Moderate
Meals included: Breakfast, packed lunch, and dinner
Accommodation: Local lodge in Marampata

This day offers a rare opportunity to explore an authentic, less-visited Inca site, creating a deeper and more personal connection with the history and spirit of the Andes.

Your final day begins very early, as you prepare for the most physically demanding stage of the trek from Choquequirao.

Early Descent to Santa Rosa

With headlamps or the first light of dawn, you’ll begin a 2-hour steep descent toward Santa Rosa.

Upon arrival, you’ll enjoy a traditional Andean breakfast, giving you the energy needed for the long day ahead.

Descent to the Apurímac River

After breakfast, continue descending for about 1.5 hours until reaching the Apurimac River.

Here, you’ll take a well-deserved break to rest, hydrate, and take photos of the dramatic canyon landscapes.

Climb to Chikiska

Next comes one of the toughest sections: a challenging uphill hike to Chikiska, where a well-earned lunch awaits you in a scenic and shaded area.

Final Ascent to Capuliyoc

In the afternoon, you’ll continue with a 3-hour gradual ascent toward Capuliyoc (2,915 m / 9,560 ft).

Along the way, you’ll pass natural viewpoints with panoramic views of the Apurimac Canyon, offering a perfect farewell to the landscapes of the trek.

Return to Cusco

At Capuliyoc, you’ll celebrate the completion of your adventure before boarding private transport back to Cusco.

Estimated arrival time: around 10:00 PM, with drop-off at your hotel.

This is the most physically demanding day, with long ascents and descents under sun exposure

Day 4 Summary

We did the 4 day and 3 night Salkantay Trek on the 27th of July, and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip. I couldn't recommend it enough, especially with Machu Picchu Teams.Everything exceeded our expectations from the accommodation and food to the organisation and most importantly, the amazing staff. Our guide Max made the experience so special. He taught us so much about the Quechua way of life and Inca traditions at every stop along the trek, which gave us such a good appreciation for the places we were visiting. He was also so much fun to be around, always making us laugh and keeping everyone's spirits high, even during the toughest parts of the hike. His positivity, encouragement and knowledge really made the experience unforgettable.A huge thank you as well to our chefs, especially Braulio, the head chef. We genuinely couldn't believe the quality of the food considering where we were. Every meal was so fresh and delicious and they had lots of vegetarian options too. We were given three generous meals a day which also included starters at lunch and dinner, plus snacks along the way. It was far beyond anything we expected on a trek. What really sets this company apart is the people. Max wasn't just a guide he genuinely cared about everyone in the group and always made sure we were doing okay. He knew exactly when to encourage us on the harder climbs, when to make us laugh, and when to stop to tell us another story about the history and culture of the area. He gave us a group name and gathered us every morning to do a chant together to get us ready for the day. You can tell he loves what he does and his passion made the whole trek so much more meaningful. The entire team was so kind and welcoming, and they made us feel looked after from start to finish. If you're thinking of doing the Salkantay Trek, I couldn't recommend Machu Picchu Teams more. It was an unforgettable experience, and we're so grateful to everyone who made it so special.

This tour is full of adventures and blessings. The exciting bicycle descent from the Andes took us through changing landscapes to the tropical rainforest. The hike through the jungle, led by an expert guide, allowed us to learn about the local flora and fauna. The RAFTING and ZIPLINING activities added excitement to the trip and were perfectly organized. The natural hot springs were an ideal place to relax after days full of activities. The visit to Machu Picchu was the highlight, with its impressive architecture and view. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a combination of adventure, nature, and culture.
