Tour Overview

Some journeys feel less like a trip and more like a true connection with nature — and the 7 Lakes of Ausangate experience is exactly that.

Set at the foot of the majestic Ausangate Mountain, this adventure is one of the most authentic and breathtaking day trips in the Andes. It’s the perfect way to immerse yourself in wild, untouched landscapes — without needing to commit to a multi-day trek.

Throughout the journey, you’ll hike across high-altitude terrain surrounded by glaciers, open valleys, and vibrant lagoons, each one shaped by the meltwater of Ausangate. These lakes are famous for their intense, ever-changing colors, creating a surreal and unforgettable scenery at every step.

And just when you think the day couldn’t get better, it ends with the perfect reward: a relaxing soak in natural hot springs, followed by a traditional meal prepared by a local family — a moment to unwind and connect with the culture of the Andes.

This is a full-day adventure, starting early at 4:00 a.m., and includes a 5-hour hike covering approximately 16 km. Despite the distance, the difficulty is considered easy to moderate, making it accessible for travelers with a basic level of fitness who are ready for a truly rewarding experience.

If you’re looking for something raw, scenic, and deeply memorable, this is more than a tour — it’s a journey into the heart of the Andes.

If you’re looking for something raw, scenic, and deeply memorable, this is more than a tour — it’s a journey into the heart of the Andes.

Trip itinerary

Your adventure begins before sunrise, with a pre-dawn pickup from your hotel in Cusco (3,399 m / 11,152 ft). From there, you’ll travel south on a scenic 3.5-hour journey into the high Andes, arriving at the remote village of Pacchanta (4,200 m / 13,780 ft) — a place surrounded by towering peaks and deeply rooted in Andean traditions.

Nestled at the base of the majestic Ausangate Mountain, Pacchanta is the gateway to one of the most spectacular and authentic hiking experiences in Peru. Once a base for experienced mountaineers, today it welcomes travelers seeking connection with nature, culture, and breathtaking landscapes.

From here, your 5-hour hike begins. As you walk through wide-open valleys and glacial terrain, you’ll encounter the incredible wildlife of the Andes — alpacas, llamas, vizcachas, Andean birds, and maybe even wild vicuñas. It’s not just a hike; it’s a journey through a living ecosystem shaped by altitude and tradition.

The true highlights of the day are the Seven Lagoons of Ausangate, each one unique in color, shape, and story:

  • Pucacocha (4,500 m) – A striking reddish lagoon, colored by mineral-rich sediments — perfect for photos and local legends.
  • Patacocha (4,860 m) – Crystal-clear waters with dramatic views of Ausangate and surrounding peaks.
  • Alqacocha (4,750 m) – A smaller, high-altitude lake with reddish tones and chances to spot wildlife.
  • Qomercocha (4,666 m) – Famous for its vibrant turquoise color, a true natural wonder.
  • Orco Otorongo (4,570 m) – A unique lagoon whose tones resemble the fur of a jaguar.
  • China Otorongo (4,600 m) – A beautiful green lagoon, complementing its neighboring “jaguar” lake.
  • Azulcocha (4,550 m) – A deep blue lagoon — the perfect final stop for unforgettable photos.

After exploring this incredible circuit, you’ll return to Pacchanta around 1:00 p.m., where the ultimate reward awaits: a relaxing soak in the natural hot springs. Imagine unwinding in warm, mineral-rich waters while surrounded by the same mountains you’ve just explored — a moment of pure connection and relaxation.

To complete the experience, you’ll enjoy a traditional Andean lunch prepared by a local family, offering not just great food, but a genuine cultural exchange.

Hiking Difficulty

The 7 Lakes of Ausangate trek is considered Level 1–2 (Easy to Moderate):

  • Level 1: Flat terrain, minimal effort
  • Level 2: Gentle slopes with some elevation gain

This makes it a high-altitude adventure that is accessible, especially for travelers who have properly acclimatized.

This experience is perfect for those seeking raw nature, fewer crowds, and a deeper connection with the Andes — all in one unforgettable day.

We were a group of four girls, all 24 years old! It was an incredible experience! Genrri was an excellent guide, and our chef, Ricardo, was fantastic; he prepared vegetarian lunch and dinner for us every day. I highly recommend it!

We did the 4 day and 3 night Salkantay Trek on the 27th of July, and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip. I couldn't recommend it enough, especially with Machu Picchu Teams.Everything exceeded our expectations from the accommodation and food to the organisation and most importantly, the amazing staff. Our guide Max made the experience so special. He taught us so much about the Quechua way of life and Inca traditions at every stop along the trek, which gave us such a good appreciation for the places we were visiting. He was also so much fun to be around, always making us laugh and keeping everyone's spirits high, even during the toughest parts of the hike. His positivity, encouragement and knowledge really made the experience unforgettable.A huge thank you as well to our chefs, especially Braulio, the head chef. We genuinely couldn't believe the quality of the food considering where we were. Every meal was so fresh and delicious and they had lots of vegetarian options too. We were given three generous meals a day which also included starters at lunch and dinner, plus snacks along the way. It was far beyond anything we expected on a trek. What really sets this company apart is the people. Max wasn't just a guide he genuinely cared about everyone in the group and always made sure we were doing okay. He knew exactly when to encourage us on the harder climbs, when to make us laugh, and when to stop to tell us another story about the history and culture of the area. He gave us a group name and gathered us every morning to do a chant together to get us ready for the day. You can tell he loves what he does and his passion made the whole trek so much more meaningful. The entire team was so kind and welcoming, and they made us feel looked after from start to finish. If you're thinking of doing the Salkantay Trek, I couldn't recommend Machu Picchu Teams more. It was an unforgettable experience, and we're so grateful to everyone who made it so special.

This tour is full of adventures and blessings. The exciting bicycle descent from the Andes took us through changing landscapes to the tropical rainforest. The hike through the jungle, led by an expert guide, allowed us to learn about the local flora and fauna. The RAFTING and ZIPLINING activities added excitement to the trip and were perfectly organized. The natural hot springs were an ideal place to relax after days full of activities. The visit to Machu Picchu was the highlight, with its impressive architecture and view. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a combination of adventure, nature, and culture.
