The Waqrapukara Trek Full-Day

Unforgettable adventure through ancient Andean trails & breathtaking mountain landscapes

Tour Overview

There are some places that just nudge their way onto your bucket list, and for me, the horn-shaped fortress of Waqrapukara is firmly at the top. Located in the Acos district of the Acomayo province, it’s a surreal, lesser-known marvel looming over a dramatic Andean landscape. I’m absolutely craving the chance to visit. There’s something about its wild, remote feeling that’s calling my name—a place once home to the Canchis culture before being conquered by the Incas. I can’t wait to hike through its staggering mountain views and unique rock formations, to see this legendary place with my own eyes.

Highlights

  • Small Groups are a Must: I’d look for an operator that guarantees intimate groups, maybe 2 to 10 people at most. It completely changes the dynamic and makes the hike a far more personal, high-quality experience compared to being lost in a crowd.
  • Safety First: Satellite phones are a big one for me. Knowing there’s a connection for any emergency, or even a non-urgent situation, provides incredible peace of mind when you’re off the beaten path.
  • Seamless Service: A hotel-to-hotel service is the dream. The idea of being picked up and dropped off right at my hotel in Cusco (elevation: 3,399 m / 11,152 ft) without a single worry before or after the trek is the ultimate in hassle-free travel.
  • Proven Reliability: I’d do my homework. A quick look at TripAdvisor and Google Reviews says everything you need to know about a company’s commitment to quality.
  • 100% Local Expertise: There’s an authenticity that comes from a locally owned and operated agency. They are authorized for the trek and know the region inside and out.
  • Highly-Trained Guides: I want a guide who is not just a trail leader but a storyteller, someone passionate and constantly updating their knowledge through professional development.
  • Logistics, Handled: The best operators take care of everything—transport, Waqrapukara permits, entrance tickets, you name it.
  • Ethical Practices: It’s important to me that the staff—the guides, the drivers—are paid promptly as soon as their work is done.
  • Authentic Groups: I would steer clear of companies that pool their groups or pass clients off to other operators. The experience should remain intimate and authentic from start to finish.

Trip itinerary

This is one of those Cusco tours that I know will leave a lasting impression. The day starts early, at 4:30 AM, with a private van collecting me from my hotel. We’ll head towards the Acomayo district, specifically to the town of Pitumarca (elevation: 3,570 m / 11,713 ft), arriving around 6:30 AM for a substantial Andean breakfast. Fueled and ready, the journey continues, skirting the edge of the beautiful Pomacanchi Lagoon (elevation: 3,679 m / 12,070 ft), a vast body of water surrounded by lush grasslands and cultivated fields—truly picturesque.

From there, we’ll proceed to the trailhead. The hike itself, lasting about 2 hours, is an experience I’m desperate to have. I imagine walking through landscapes teeming with local flora and fauna, with the ever-present, dramatic views of the mountains and their wild rock formations. The goal is to reach the Waqrapukara fortress around 11:00 AM. After a short rest to catch my breath and just admire the view, I’d join the guide for a detailed tour of this incredible archaeological center. The guide’s stories would bring the stones to life, after which I’d have plenty of free time to explore on my own and get those epic shots.

After fully exploring the fortress, we’ll begin the trek back to Pitumarca. A well-deserved and delicious lunch will be waiting. Finally, we’ll board our transport for the return journey to the city of Cusco, marking the end of an all-out, unforgettable day.

What is included

  • Private Round-Trip Transport: Comfortable and hassle-free travel to and from the trailhead.
  • Hotel Pick-up in Cusco: Seamless service right from your doorstep.
  • Entrance Ticket: All necessary permits for Waqrapukara are covered.
  • Specialized Bilingual Guide: A professional to lead the way and share in-depth knowledge of the site’s history and culture.
  • Meals: A hearty breakfast and a delicious lunch are provided to keep you energized.
  • First-Aid Kit: Carried by the guide for your safety.
  • Trekking Pole: A single pole is provided to assist with stability on the trail.
  • Gratuities: Tips for the guide and driver are optional but always appreciated for excellent service.
  • Personal Expenses: Any souvenirs or extra snacks you might wish to purchase.

This isn’t just a packing list; it’s a guide to being perfectly prepared for a high-altitude adventure.

  • Small Daypack: A comfortable and lightweight backpack is essential for carrying your belongings.
  • Original Passport/ID: You’ll need this for any checkpoints and for entry to the archaeological site.
  • Water (At Least 1.5 Liters): High-altitude hiking is dehydrating. A reusable stainless steel bottle or a hydration pack like a Camelbak is a great way to ensure you drink enough.
  • Water-Resistant Trekking Shoes: Good quality, waterproof boots with a non-slip sole are non-negotiable. They provide the traction you’ll need on rocky, uneven, or potentially wet paths.
  • Layered Clothing: The mountain climate is famously fickle. Bring warm layers (thermal underwear, fleece), a hat, gloves, and warm socks. Synthetic fabrics are ideal as they dry quickly and wick away moisture.
  • Rain Gear: A waterproof jacket or a simple poncho is crucial. Sudden showers can happen even in the dry season.
  • Sun Protection: The sun at this altitude is incredibly strong. Bring high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed sun hat.
  • Trekking Pants: Comfortable, durable pants are a must.
  • Energy Snacks: While meals are provided, having your own stash of energy bars, dried fruit, nuts, or chocolate is perfect for a quick boost on the trail.
  • Personal Medication Kit: In addition to any personal prescriptions, include painkillers, blister tape (like Moleskin), and anything for motion sickness.
  • Camera or Smartphone: Bring a fully charged camera with spare batteries or a portable power bank. The views are too epic not to capture.
  • Cash for Small Expenses: For tips or any personal purchases.
  • Mosquito Repellent: While not a huge issue, it can be useful in the early morning or late afternoon.
  • Bandana or Buff: Incredibly versatile for protecting your face from wind, dust, or sun.

Important Information for Visiting Waqrapukara

Waqrapukara is one of Peru’s most fascinating and less-crowded Andean destinations, and it can be visited year-round. However, weather and trail conditions vary significantly by season, so choosing the right time is key to a safer and more enjoyable trek.

  • The Rainy Season (November to April): During these months, the region sees its heaviest rainfall. Showers can be intense, especially in the afternoon and evening, making trails slippery and more challenging. However, this period also brings its own unique beauty, as the entire landscape transforms into a stunning, vibrant green. If you plan to visit now, waterproof gear—a poncho, waterproof pants, and sturdy boots—is essential. Trekking poles will become your best friend for maintaining balance.
  • The Dry Season (May to October): This is the most popular season for travelers, as rainfall is infrequent and the weather is more stable. Temperatures are cooler and more pleasant for hiking at high altitudes. If you prefer to avoid rain and enjoy clearer, more expansive views, the dry season is highly recommended. Even so, mountain weather is famously unpredictable, so it’s always wise to be prepared for unexpected changes.

Climate

The climate at Waqrapukara is defined by its high altitude and the region’s seasonal shifts. The rainy season turns the landscape into a lush, green paradise, which is visually stunning. The dry season offers stable weather with clear skies, perfect for trekking. Daytime temperatures can be warm and pleasant, but mornings and evenings get quite cold, especially at the highest points.

Altitude

Waqrapukara sits above 4,000 meters (over 13,000 feet), meaning the trek takes place entirely at high altitude. At these heights, there is less oxygen in the air, which can cause altitude sickness if you’re not properly acclimatized. It’s crucial to allow your body to adjust. Plan to spend at least a couple of days in Cusco or another high-altitude area before starting your trek. Physical exertion at altitude also increases the risk of dehydration, as the dry air causes you to lose fluids faster. Staying well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water regularly is fundamental.

Preparation and Recommendations

  • Clothing & Equipment: Layering is the golden rule. Start with a thermal base layer for the cold mornings, switch to light, breathable clothing during the day’s hike, and always have a waterproof outer layer ready. A hat, gloves, a scarf, and sun protection are non-negotiable.
  • Hydration: Dehydration is a common issue on mountain treks. Carry enough water for the entire day and sip it constantly. While there are natural water sources, it’s safest to bring a water filter or purification tablets.
  • Physical Preparation: Waqrapukara is a moderately demanding trek. Being in good physical condition is essential to enjoy it fully. The hike can last several hours over steep inclines and uneven terrain, requiring endurance and a steady pace. Undertaking some preparatory hikes will help acclimatize your body.
  • Food & Energy: Pack energy-rich snacks like cereal bars, nuts, and chocolate to maintain your energy levels. Lunch on the trail, often enjoyed with a view of the Apurímac River canyon, is part of the experience.
  • Safety & Accessibility: While the route is less traveled than others in Peru, the mountainous terrain carries inherent risks, especially in the rainy season when trails can become treacherous. An expert guide will know the route and potential hazards intimately.

With the right preparation, a visit to Waqrapukara will be an incredibly rewarding experience. Whether you go during the lush rainy season or the clear dry season, you’ll be treated to stunning views, fascinating history, and the physical challenge of an epic Andean trek.

We did the 4 day and 3 night Salkantay Trek on the 27th of July, and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip. I couldn't recommend it enough, especially with Machu Picchu Teams.Everything exceeded our expectations from the accommodation and food to the organisation and most importantly, the amazing staff. Our guide Max made the experience so special. He taught us so much about the Quechua way of life and Inca traditions at every stop along the trek, which gave us such a good appreciation for the places we were visiting. He was also so much fun to be around, always making us laugh and keeping everyone's spirits high, even during the toughest parts of the hike. His positivity, encouragement and knowledge really made the experience unforgettable.A huge thank you as well to our chefs, especially Braulio, the head chef. We genuinely couldn't believe the quality of the food considering where we were. Every meal was so fresh and delicious and they had lots of vegetarian options too. We were given three generous meals a day which also included starters at lunch and dinner, plus snacks along the way. It was far beyond anything we expected on a trek. What really sets this company apart is the people. Max wasn't just a guide he genuinely cared about everyone in the group and always made sure we were doing okay. He knew exactly when to encourage us on the harder climbs, when to make us laugh, and when to stop to tell us another story about the history and culture of the area. He gave us a group name and gathered us every morning to do a chant together to get us ready for the day. You can tell he loves what he does and his passion made the whole trek so much more meaningful. The entire team was so kind and welcoming, and they made us feel looked after from start to finish. If you're thinking of doing the Salkantay Trek, I couldn't recommend Machu Picchu Teams more. It was an unforgettable experience, and we're so grateful to everyone who made it so special.

This tour is full of adventures and blessings. The exciting bicycle descent from the Andes took us through changing landscapes to the tropical rainforest. The hike through the jungle, led by an expert guide, allowed us to learn about the local flora and fauna. The RAFTING and ZIPLINING activities added excitement to the trip and were perfectly organized. The natural hot springs were an ideal place to relax after days full of activities. The visit to Machu Picchu was the highlight, with its impressive architecture and view. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a combination of adventure, nature, and culture.
