Trip itinerary

Colca Canyon Full-Day Tour – Itinerary from Arequipa

Your adventure begins very early, with pickup from Arequipa between 2:45 and 3:30 a.m. From there, you’ll start a scenic 3-hour journey toward Chivay, the gateway to Colca Canyon. As you leave the city behind, you’ll travel through impressive Andean landscapes, with views of mountains, valleys, and the snow-covered Chachani Volcano.

Upon arrival in Chivay, you’ll enjoy breakfast before continuing deeper into the Colca Valley.

After breakfast, the journey continues for about 1 more hour toward the famous Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint. Along the way, you’ll stop at natural viewpoints where you can admire the valley, its terraces, and the surrounding mountains.

At Cruz del Cóndor, one of the most iconic viewpoints in Peru, you’ll have time to appreciate the impressive depth of the canyon and, with luck, witness the majestic flight of the Andean condor. You’ll spend approximately 1 hour here, taking in the scenery and enjoying one of the most unforgettable moments of the tour.

On the way back, you’ll pass through traditional villages such as Yanque and Maca, where you’ll see colonial churches, local people wearing beautifully embroidered traditional clothing, and ancient pre-Inca terraces still used today to grow Andean crops like corn, quinoa, and kiwicha.

Before lunch, you’ll have the option to visit the thermal baths, where you can relax in natural hot springs with temperatures of around 35°C / 95°F — a perfect way to unwind after the morning’s journey.

After lunch, the return trip to Arequipa begins. On the way, you’ll stop at the Patapampa viewpoint, located at 4,800 m / 15,748 ft, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding volcanoes and snow-capped mountains.

The final scenic stop is the Pampa Cañahuas National Reserve, a beautiful high-Andean landscape where you may spot vicuñas, alpacas, llamas, and possibly flamingos, ibis, Andean geese, ducks, and the Andean eagle, also known locally as the Kara Kara.

You’ll arrive back in Arequipa at approximately 5:30 p.m., ending a full day of wildlife, culture, landscapes, and one of Peru’s most breathtaking natural wonders.

What is included

  • Reliable Round-Trip Transportation: Travel safely and comfortably in our premium tourist vehicles, ensuring a smooth and convenient journey throughout your entire excursion in the Cusco region.

  • Energizing Morning Breakfast: Begin your adventure with a delicious, locally sourced breakfast designed to give you the stamina needed for a day of high-altitude exploration.

  • Expert Bilingual Tour Guide: Discover the secrets of the Andes with our professional, fluent English-speaking guides who provide in-depth historical, cultural, and natural context to every step of your journey.

  • Comprehensive Safety Equipment: Explore with absolute peace of mind. Our team is fully equipped with complete first aid kits and trained to prioritize your health and well-being at all times.

  • Premium Buffet Lunch: Recharge your energy with a spectacular buffet meal. Enjoy a wide, delicious selection of traditional Peruvian cuisine and international dishes crafted to satisfy every palate after a morning of discovery.

Please note that the following admission fees are not included in your initial booking. These must be paid directly in cash (Peruvian Soles) on the day of your excursion:

  • Colca Canyon Entrance Fee: A mandatory regional tourist ticket is required to access the Colca Valley and the famous Cruz del Condor viewpoint. The current cost is 70.00 PEN. We highly recommend carrying exact change in local currency to ensure a smooth and efficient entry at the control point.

  • Thermal Hot Springs Admission: Following your exploration of the canyon, you will have the opportunity to relax and recover in the local thermal baths. Entrance to the hot springs is an optional activity and costs 15.00 PEN, which is payable directly at the facility.

This high-altitude adventure reaches elevations exceeding 4,000 meters (13,100 feet). To ensure a comfortable experience and mitigate the effects of altitude sickness (known locally as soroche), we strongly advise spending at least one full day in Arequipa prior to your tour to allow your body to adjust. Travelers arriving directly from high-elevation destinations such as Cusco or Puno are generally already acclimatized.

Essential Packing List for the Colca Canyon

To maximize your comfort and enjoyment during this scenic excursion, we highly recommend bringing the following essential items:

  • Original Passport: Mandatory for official identification and required at various regional checkpoints.

  • Compact Daypack: Bring a lightweight, ergonomic backpack for your daily essentials. Please leave large luggage securely stored at your hotel or accommodation.

  • Adequate Hydration: Carry a reusable water bottle. Staying consistently hydrated is crucial for maintaining energy and managing high altitudes.

  • Local Currency (Peruvian Soles): Bring cash in small denominations. This is necessary for purchasing your mandatory tourist ticket, optional hot springs admission, local snacks, and personal souvenirs.

  • Warm Mountain Clothing: Andean temperatures can drop significantly, especially during early morning departures and at high mountain passes. A warm jacket or fleece layer is highly recommended.

  • High-Altitude Sun Protection: The sun’s UV rays are incredibly intense at this elevation, even in cool weather. Protect yourself with broad-spectrum sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed sun hat.

  • Swimwear: Pack a swimsuit if you plan to relax and recover in the optional thermal hot springs after exploring the canyon.

  • Photography Gear: Bring a camera or smartphone to capture the dramatic canyon landscapes, traditional Andean villages, local wildlife, and the majestic flight of the Andean condor.

  • Portable Power Bank: This is a comprehensive full-day tour. Ensure your devices remain fully charged for photos and videos by carrying an extra battery pack or portable charger.

We were a group of four girls, all 24 years old! It was an incredible experience! Genrri was an excellent guide, and our chef, Ricardo, was fantastic; he prepared vegetarian lunch and dinner for us every day. I highly recommend it!

We did the 4 day and 3 night Salkantay Trek on the 27th of July, and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip. I couldn't recommend it enough, especially with Machu Picchu Teams.Everything exceeded our expectations from the accommodation and food to the organisation and most importantly, the amazing staff. Our guide Max made the experience so special. He taught us so much about the Quechua way of life and Inca traditions at every stop along the trek, which gave us such a good appreciation for the places we were visiting. He was also so much fun to be around, always making us laugh and keeping everyone's spirits high, even during the toughest parts of the hike. His positivity, encouragement and knowledge really made the experience unforgettable.A huge thank you as well to our chefs, especially Braulio, the head chef. We genuinely couldn't believe the quality of the food considering where we were. Every meal was so fresh and delicious and they had lots of vegetarian options too. We were given three generous meals a day which also included starters at lunch and dinner, plus snacks along the way. It was far beyond anything we expected on a trek. What really sets this company apart is the people. Max wasn't just a guide he genuinely cared about everyone in the group and always made sure we were doing okay. He knew exactly when to encourage us on the harder climbs, when to make us laugh, and when to stop to tell us another story about the history and culture of the area. He gave us a group name and gathered us every morning to do a chant together to get us ready for the day. You can tell he loves what he does and his passion made the whole trek so much more meaningful. The entire team was so kind and welcoming, and they made us feel looked after from start to finish. If you're thinking of doing the Salkantay Trek, I couldn't recommend Machu Picchu Teams more. It was an unforgettable experience, and we're so grateful to everyone who made it so special.

This tour is full of adventures and blessings. The exciting bicycle descent from the Andes took us through changing landscapes to the tropical rainforest. The hike through the jungle, led by an expert guide, allowed us to learn about the local flora and fauna. The RAFTING and ZIPLINING activities added excitement to the trip and were perfectly organized. The natural hot springs were an ideal place to relax after days full of activities. The visit to Machu Picchu was the highlight, with its impressive architecture and view. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a combination of adventure, nature, and culture.
