Trip itinerary

Early Morning Departure from Cusco Your adventure begins between 4:30 AM and 5:00 AM with a prompt pick-up directly from your Cusco hotel. You will be greeted by our professional expert guide and board a comfortable, private vehicle to depart the city and head toward the Andes.

Scenic Drive to the Trailhead (Patabamba or Tauca) Enjoy a relaxing 1.5 to 2-hour journey to the starting point of your trek, situated in the high-altitude Andean communities of Patabamba or Tauca. This scenic route offers excellent photography opportunities, showcasing traditional rural villages, ancient farming terraces, and sweeping mountain landscapes.

The Trek Begins: High Andean Landscapes Starting at a high elevation, the trail features a relatively gentle initial pace, allowing you to adapt to the altitude while absorbing the tranquil environment. Along the route, you will experience:

  • Seasonal high-altitude Andean lakes.

  • Expansive views of rolling hills and deep valleys.

  • Encounters with local shepherds tending to alpacas and sheep.

  • A firsthand look at traditional farming communities maintaining centuries-old practices.

Guided Tour of Huchuy Qosqo Archaeological Site After several hours of hiking through pristine landscapes, you will arrive at the remarkable Huchuy Qosqo archaeological complex. Here, your guide will lead a comprehensive tour, explaining:

  • The rich history and strategic purpose of the site.

  • Classic Inca architecture and advanced construction techniques.

  • The engineering behind the expansive agricultural terraces and functional water systems.

  • The layout of the ceremonial platforms and residential sectors.

Following the guided portion, you will have ample free time to explore the ruins independently and photograph the unparalleled panoramic views of the Sacred Valley below.

Lunch Break Take a well-deserved rest to enjoy your packed lunch, or opt to dine later upon reaching the valley below. Please note that meals are not included in the standard itinerary unless requested as an additional service during booking.

Descent into the Sacred Valley (Lamay) Following your exploration of Huchuy Qosqo, the journey continues with a 2 to 3-hour downhill hike toward Lamay, a charming town nestled in the Sacred Valley. The descent follows historic Inca trails, winding through lush agricultural terraces and offering spectacular canyon views at every turn.

Return Transfer to Cusco Upon arrival in Lamay, your private transportation will be waiting. The relaxing return journey to Cusco takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, with an estimated drop-off at your hotel between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM.

About Huchuy Qosqo: A Hidden Inca Marvel Translating to “Little Cusco” in Quechua, Huchuy Qosqo is a premier archaeological site perched dramatically above the Sacred Valley. Historically recognized as the royal estate of Emperor Viracocha Inca, the complex was later expanded by subsequent rulers.

The site features a striking combination of fine stonework and adobe architecture, extensive irrigation channels, storage structures known as collcas, and a grand ceremonial platform. Its secluded, cliffside location provides one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the entire Cusco region, making it an essential destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers seeking an authentic, off-the-beaten-path experience.

What is included

  • Direct Hotel Pick-Up in Cusco: Start your adventure seamlessly with a convenient early morning pick-up directly from your accommodation in the city.

  • Comfortable Round-Trip Transportation: Travel safely in a premium, dedicated tourist vehicle from Cusco to the trailhead and back from the Sacred Valley upon completing the trek.

  • Expert English-Speaking Tour Guide: Hike alongside a certified local professional who possesses extensive knowledge of Inca history, Andean culture, and high-altitude mountain safety.

  • Comprehensive Safety Equipment: Trek with complete peace of mind knowing your team carries a fully stocked first aid kit and an emergency oxygen tank for altitude support.

  • In-Depth Guided Tour of Huchuy Qosqo: Enjoy an extensive, expertly led exploration of the archaeological complex, uncovering the secrets of Emperor Viracocha’s ancient royal estate.

  • Huchuy Qosqo Entrance Ticket: The admission fee to the archaeological site is approximately 20 PEN. Please bring this amount in local cash (Peruvian Soles). To ensure a smooth and efficient entry, your guide will personally collect these funds and handle the ticketing process for you directly at the control point.

  • Meals and Trail Snacks: Breakfast, lunch, and hiking snacks are not provided. We strongly recommend packing a boxed lunch, high-energy snacks, and sufficient drinking water for the day. You will also have the option to purchase a meal in the Sacred Valley once the trek concludes.

  • Personal Travel Insurance: Travel and medical insurance are not included. We highly advise all travelers to secure comprehensive insurance that covers high-altitude trekking in the Peruvian Andes prior to departure.

  • Personal Expenses: Any additional out-of-pocket costs, such as souvenirs, extra beverages, or optional purchases along the route, are not covered in the tour price.

  • Gratuities: Tips for your trekking guide and transportation driver are not included. While entirely optional, gratuities are a customary and much-appreciated way to acknowledge excellent service.

To ensure a safe, comfortable, and unforgettable trekking experience in the Peruvian Andes, we highly recommend packing the following essential items for your full-day excursion:

  • Original Passport: Mandatory for official identification and required at various control points throughout the Cusco region.

  • Comfortable Daypack: A lightweight, ergonomic backpack to carry your personal items, snacks, and extra layers while keeping your hands free on the trail.

  • Adequate Hydration: Bring a minimum of 1.5 to 2 liters of water per person. Staying consistently hydrated is crucial for acclimatization and maintaining energy at high altitudes.

  • Sturdy Trekking Footwear: High-quality, broken-in hiking boots or trail shoes with excellent grip are essential for safely navigating the uneven original Inca pathways and rocky Andean terrain.

  • Layered Mountain Clothing: Temperatures in the Sacred Valley fluctuate significantly from early morning to late afternoon. Dress in breathable, easily removable layers to adapt to the changing mountain climate.

  • Reliable Rain Gear: A durable waterproof jacket or rain poncho is a strict necessity, as mountain weather can be unpredictable, especially during the Andean wet season.

  • High-Altitude Sun Protection: The UV index at this elevation is intense. Protect yourself with a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher), polarized sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed sun hat.

  • High-Energy Trail Snacks: Pack lightweight, nutrient-dense foods such as protein bars, mixed nuts, trail mix, or fresh fruit to sustain your stamina during the ascent.

  • Local Currency (Peruvian Soles): Carry cash in small denominations. This is necessary for your entrance ticket, purchasing water or snacks in local communities, optional meals after the trek, and gratuities.

We were a group of four girls, all 24 years old! It was an incredible experience! Genrri was an excellent guide, and our chef, Ricardo, was fantastic; he prepared vegetarian lunch and dinner for us every day. I highly recommend it!

We did the 4 day and 3 night Salkantay Trek on the 27th of July, and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip. I couldn't recommend it enough, especially with Machu Picchu Teams.Everything exceeded our expectations from the accommodation and food to the organisation and most importantly, the amazing staff. Our guide Max made the experience so special. He taught us so much about the Quechua way of life and Inca traditions at every stop along the trek, which gave us such a good appreciation for the places we were visiting. He was also so much fun to be around, always making us laugh and keeping everyone's spirits high, even during the toughest parts of the hike. His positivity, encouragement and knowledge really made the experience unforgettable.A huge thank you as well to our chefs, especially Braulio, the head chef. We genuinely couldn't believe the quality of the food considering where we were. Every meal was so fresh and delicious and they had lots of vegetarian options too. We were given three generous meals a day which also included starters at lunch and dinner, plus snacks along the way. It was far beyond anything we expected on a trek. What really sets this company apart is the people. Max wasn't just a guide he genuinely cared about everyone in the group and always made sure we were doing okay. He knew exactly when to encourage us on the harder climbs, when to make us laugh, and when to stop to tell us another story about the history and culture of the area. He gave us a group name and gathered us every morning to do a chant together to get us ready for the day. You can tell he loves what he does and his passion made the whole trek so much more meaningful. The entire team was so kind and welcoming, and they made us feel looked after from start to finish. If you're thinking of doing the Salkantay Trek, I couldn't recommend Machu Picchu Teams more. It was an unforgettable experience, and we're so grateful to everyone who made it so special.

This tour is full of adventures and blessings. The exciting bicycle descent from the Andes took us through changing landscapes to the tropical rainforest. The hike through the jungle, led by an expert guide, allowed us to learn about the local flora and fauna. The RAFTING and ZIPLINING activities added excitement to the trip and were perfectly organized. The natural hot springs were an ideal place to relax after days full of activities. The visit to Machu Picchu was the highlight, with its impressive architecture and view. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a combination of adventure, nature, and culture.
