Day two of the Inca Trail 4 Days to Machu Picchu is the most challenging and rewarding part of the trek. This is the day you reach the highest point of the entire route: Warmiwañusca (4,215 m / 13,780 ft).

The ascent is steep and physically demanding, requiring steady pacing and determination. As you climb higher, the landscapes become more dramatic, with rugged mountain peaks, deep valleys, and panoramic Andean views that make every step worthwhile.

Reaching the summit is a true achievement. From the top, you’ll enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Andes, one of the most memorable moments of the entire Inca Trail experience.

The day begins with a climb to the second-highest point of the trail at 3,850 m (12,630 ft). From here, the landscape gradually transforms as you enter the high cloud forest, one of the most beautiful and biodiverse sections of the Inca Trail.

  • Sayacmarca, a fortress-like complex built dramatically on the mountainside
  • Phuyupatamarca, known as the “Town in the Clouds,” famous for its terraces and advanced water channels

As you continue along the original stone-paved Inca paths, you’ll pass through lush vegetation, waterfalls, and panoramic viewpoints, creating one of the most visually rewarding days of the trek.

The final stretch leads you to the remarkable Wiñay Wayna, one of the most impressive and well-preserved Inca sites along the trail. This is also where you will spend your last night.

Enjoy the Experience

The Inca Trail is not just a hike, it is a journey through history, culture, and nature.

Take your time to enjoy the landscapes, explore archaeological sites, and connect with fellow travelers. The experience is about more than reaching Machu Picchu—it’s about creating memories that last a lifetime.

Planning your Inca Trail 4 Days to Machu Picchu requires advance preparation, as access to this iconic route is strictly limited.

Book Well in Advance

During the peak season (May to October), permits can sell out very quickly. It is highly recommended to book 6 to 8 months in advance, or even earlier for popular dates.

For the shoulder and rainy season (April, November, December, January, March), booking 2 to 4 months in advance is usually sufficient.

Permit Release

Inca Trail permits are typically released once per year, usually in early October for the following year. Availability is limited and demand is high, so early booking is essential.

Licensed Tour Operators Only

Permits for the Inca Trail cannot be purchased individually. You must book through a licensed and authorized tour operator, who will secure your permit using your personal details.

Passport Information

All booking information must match your passport exactly, including:

  • Full name
  • Passport number
  • Date of birth
  • Nationality

Permits are non-transferable and non-changeable, so accuracy is essential. Your passport must also be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel date.

Real-Time Availability

While some websites display availability, the most reliable way to confirm your dates is by contacting a licensed operator directly. They have access to the official government system and can verify availability in real time.

Booking early and providing accurate information ensures you secure your spot on one of the most sought-after treks in the world.

Prepare Physically

The Inca Trail is a physically demanding trek, involving hiking at high altitudes, so it is essential to be well-prepared. Engage in regular exercise, focusing on cardio and endurance training, to build your stamina. This will help your body acclimate to the higher elevations, making the trek more enjoyable and less strenuous.

Stay Hydrated

Hydration is critical during the hike, especially at higher altitudes where the risk of dehydration increases. Be sure to carry a refillable water bottle and drink plenty of fluids throughout the journey. It’s also advisable to bring water purification tablets or a filtered water bottle to ensure you have access to clean drinking water during the trek.

Dress Appropriately

The weather in the Andes can change quickly, so it’s essential to dress in layers. Opt for comfortable, moisture-wicking clothing that can be easily added or removed as temperatures fluctuate. A waterproof jacket or poncho is essential to protect yourself from rain and wind.

Protect Yourself from the Sun

At high altitudes, the sun’s rays can be much stronger. Apply sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin, and don’t forget to wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to shield your eyes from harmful UV rays.

Pack Snacks and Energy Boosters

To maintain energy levels during the trek, bring lightweight, high-energy snacks, such as nuts, granola bars, and dried fruit. These snacks will provide the necessary fuel to keep you going throughout the day.

Take Your Time

The Inca Trail involves challenging terrain, including steep climbs, so it’s crucial to pace yourself. Take breaks when needed and listen to your body. Give yourself time to acclimate to the altitude and enjoy the stunning views along the way. The journey is just as important as the destination.

Engage with a Knowledgeable Guide

To enhance your experience and ensure your safety, it is highly recommended to hike the Inca Trail with an experienced guide. A knowledgeable guide will provide valuable insights about the history, culture, and landscapes you encounter along the trail, enriching your journey and ensuring a safe and well-guided trek.

Respect the Environment

The Inca Trail is a pristine natural area, and it’s important to practice responsible tourism. Stick to the designated trails, properly dispose of waste, and avoid leaving any trace of your visit. Let’s preserve this incredible ecosystem for future generations.

Capture the Moment

Be sure to bring your camera or smartphone to capture the unforgettable beauty of the Inca Trail. Take photos of the awe-inspiring mountain landscapes, ancient ruins, and the wildlife you encounter along the way. These images will serve as lasting memories of your incredible adventure.

Embrace the Magic

Above all, take the time to fully immerse yourself in the magic of the Inca Trail. Appreciate the serenity, the stunning scenery, and the ancient energy of this sacred path. Allow yourself to be fully present in the moment and create memories that will last a lifetime.

We were a group of four girls, all 24 years old! It was an incredible experience! Genrri was an excellent guide, and our chef, Ricardo, was fantastic; he prepared vegetarian lunch and dinner for us every day. I highly recommend it!

We did the 4 day and 3 night Salkantay Trek on the 27th of July, and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip. I couldn't recommend it enough, especially with Machu Picchu Teams.Everything exceeded our expectations from the accommodation and food to the organisation and most importantly, the amazing staff. Our guide Max made the experience so special. He taught us so much about the Quechua way of life and Inca traditions at every stop along the trek, which gave us such a good appreciation for the places we were visiting. He was also so much fun to be around, always making us laugh and keeping everyone's spirits high, even during the toughest parts of the hike. His positivity, encouragement and knowledge really made the experience unforgettable.A huge thank you as well to our chefs, especially Braulio, the head chef. We genuinely couldn't believe the quality of the food considering where we were. Every meal was so fresh and delicious and they had lots of vegetarian options too. We were given three generous meals a day which also included starters at lunch and dinner, plus snacks along the way. It was far beyond anything we expected on a trek. What really sets this company apart is the people. Max wasn't just a guide he genuinely cared about everyone in the group and always made sure we were doing okay. He knew exactly when to encourage us on the harder climbs, when to make us laugh, and when to stop to tell us another story about the history and culture of the area. He gave us a group name and gathered us every morning to do a chant together to get us ready for the day. You can tell he loves what he does and his passion made the whole trek so much more meaningful. The entire team was so kind and welcoming, and they made us feel looked after from start to finish. If you're thinking of doing the Salkantay Trek, I couldn't recommend Machu Picchu Teams more. It was an unforgettable experience, and we're so grateful to everyone who made it so special.

This tour is full of adventures and blessings. The exciting bicycle descent from the Andes took us through changing landscapes to the tropical rainforest. The hike through the jungle, led by an expert guide, allowed us to learn about the local flora and fauna. The RAFTING and ZIPLINING activities added excitement to the trip and were perfectly organized. The natural hot springs were an ideal place to relax after days full of activities. The visit to Machu Picchu was the highlight, with its impressive architecture and view. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a combination of adventure, nature, and culture.

I had an amazing time doing the Salkantay trek with Machu pichu teams! Especially Nacho who was an incredible guide for our group, always making sure we were all having a good time, having fun and looking after us from the start to the end. Big thanks to the whole team :)
