Your train departs around 6:10 or 6:40 AM, following a scenic route along the Urubamba Valley. Upon arrival at Km 104, your guide will meet you, check your permits, and provide a brief orientation before starting the hike.
Hike to Wiñay Wayna
The trek begins with a gradual 3-hour uphill hike, ascending from 2,000 m to 2,700 m through lush vegetation and original Inca stone paths.
Your first major highlight is Wiñay Wayna, one of the most impressive archaeological sites along the trail. Here, you’ll explore the terraces and structures with your guide and enjoy a packed picnic lunch (cooking is not permitted in this section of the trail).
Inti Punku – First View of Machu Picchu
After lunch, continue along a mostly flat trail for about 2 more hours to reach the iconic Inti Punku.
From this exclusive viewpoint, accessible only to Inca Trail hikers, you’ll experience your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu, a truly unforgettable moment.
Arrival at Machu Picchu
From the Sun Gate, you’ll descend for approximately 45 minutes to the upper terraces of Machu Picchu, the perfect spot for classic photos with Huayna Picchu in the background.
In this area, your guide will explain the importance of the terraces and the Guardian’s House. You’ll spend about 1 hour exploring the upper sector, as the full guided tour of the citadel will take place on Day 2.
